Open Book Tutoring Centre

The Open Book Tutoring Centre offers a unique reading program that stimulates the intellectual development of the child.  The Montessori method is followed so that each child learns at their own pace while developing independence, confidence, and the key building blocks of language skills that allow for future success.

The Centre is designed for children aged 3 to 9 years old and is committed to helping children develop to their fullest potential in a safe, caring and nurturing environment.  It is founded on the principle of equipping children with pivotal building blocks and instilling a wonderful confidence within the child so that they acquire a joy of learning and know that they CAN succeed in school.

Unfortunately, there is a gap in the public school system between the JK/SK curriculum and the expectation for Grade 1 students.  The play-based learning program does not provide the proper literacy lessons that are required to put children on the right path for reading and other academic subjects.

Even with the child possibly learning how to read holistically, he or she has no comprehension of what they are reading and they are not developing effective reading skills.  The child is simply memorizing words, rather than learning the basic fundamentals of knowing how to decode a word.

The Open Book Tutoring Centre uses the Montessori Language materials to initially teach children the phonetic sounds of the language.  From here, they can begin to “build words”, (also imperative for developing spelling skills) using the sounds that they hear in the words, thus, children are not just being taught how to read words, they are indirectly and more importantly being taught how to spell them as well.

The first step of the program, regardless of the age of the child, is for the child to learn and master the phonetic sounds of the English language.

The second step is to build phonetic words, using the prepared exercises.

The third step is where the child begins learning “silent vowel” words, phonographs, diagraphs and word blends.

Children, depending on the maturity level of each individual child, will begin to put all of this together and a confidence and ease of reading occurs.  As soon as your child begins to read, a book will be sent home after each session for the child to read at home and be returned for the next lesson.

The Open Book Tutoring Centre provides the tools to support children in becoming successful readers and spellers, regardless of whether your child is 3 or 9 years old.  This will allow them to be well prepared for any grade in school and for life in general.

This program will be successful for all age groups.  Whilst 4 and 5 year olds are still in the “sponge” learning stage, older children are at a completely different stage developmentally and also learn at a very fast pace, once they are being taught using the right learning tools and materials.
